I managed to figure out a solution to this - was actually meant to post a year ago
I'd been having the same problem with my Opera Mini 6 (version 6.0.24288) giving me the same "Another Opera user has synchronised his or her data with this device" message - it turned out what was going on is I'd given my username to log on instead of my full email address, which was what I used the first time round.
Took me a while to figure this - to check, I looked at the _b5f_1_3.rs file and lo and behold it had my email address stored as my opera link credentials (read here for more details on the files)
Trying again, I put in my email address to log on which worked fine.
Of course, the question is what happens if you continue after that message - do you lose your bookmarks on your phone or on your link account? The advice given above is partially helpful however its no good if its your phone you lose. To that there's another file you can check out which is the _b5f_2.rs file - this contains all the bookmarks and if you backup this you can restore if all goes wrong (on Opera Mini 4 its file that ends in ..._m_b100.rms).
It helped that I'd installed my Opera Mini to my Nokia phone's E: drive so was able to access via usb, if you don't you'd probably have to mess around with doing phone backups which might make things tricky. Hope this helps with anyone having the same problem
